Mineralogists generally prefer the name dalmatian stone for exactly this reason. It is a trade name that stuck.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003e\u003cstrong\u003eThe black spots are not tourmaline.\u003c\/strong\u003e This is repeated constantly in crystal shops and it is not right. Analysis has identified the dark inclusions as \u003cem\u003earfvedsonite\u003c\/em\u003e, an amphibole mineral. Black tourmaline and arfvedsonite are quite different minerals; the confusion appears to have started somewhere in the trade and been copied ever since.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eNeither correction makes it a lesser stone.
